20 Weeks of Tiki Drinks
On the small island of Alameda, California is a quaint little tiki bar which houses a vast collection of rums from around the world as well as delicious tiki-inspired libations for your consumption. This small hide away is the one and only Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge. They have an exclusive “Kill Devil Club” for those that have conquer the extensive rum collection. The number of regulars and Alameda locals is quite impressive and to keep these thirsty travelers returning for another round, special events are a common occurrence. One of the most ambitious events I have been witness to at Forbidden Island has to be their 20 Weeks of Tiki Drinks event.
These last twenty Tuesdays, my husband and I embarked on one of the most fun long-term endeavors we’ve ever gone out to do together. 20 Weeks of Tiki Drinks boasted a classic old-fashioned cocktail hand made every Tuesday night by the outstanding Brian Rechenmarcher. Participants in this weekly challenge received a punch card within the first two weeks of it’s start. Every week, a new cocktail was served. The previous week’s drink was available to order if missed, but you couldn’t play catch-up if you wanted to drink a concoction that was older than a week.
It was a very enjoyable date night to be looked forward to every Tuesday. I would order my Tuesday special and Erick would check off a new rum on his Kill Devil list. AND, I’m proud to say, only had to do a catch up week once. Of the 20 weeks, we attended 19. Not bad, if I do say so, myself. Then they wrapped up the celebration with a special party on the Wednesday following the final Tuesday.
We made new friends and met very entertaining people. I can’t wait to see what our next adventure holds!
If you’re more of a picture person, my instagram coverage is above with the images in order of most recent to oldest. I did my best to capture every drink each week. If you click on the image, it will open up a description with the name of the cocktail and my thoughts on the taste.
