Spider Egg Sac Hunt: Be Kind to Spiders Week 2026
With Be Kind to Spiders Week crossing paths with Easter, I couldn’t resist kicking off the festivities with a spider egg sac hunt! This has been the second year in my 8 years of celebrating that this has occurred (previously in 2023) and it only seemed appropriate. As fate would have it, spiders DO lay eggs. Additionally, I’m a sucker for pulling off a spider-themed scavenger hunt whenever the opportunity arises. As if that wasn’t enough, I had this crazy idea to turn lace doilies into egg sacs. Then, I hid the sacks around our yard, complete with a colored egg and filled with an adorable spider figure.
What a Spider Egg Sac Hunt Looks Like
A spider egg sac hunt doesn’t actually look too different from a regular egg hunt. However, instead of the eggs being filled with chocolates, I hid a spider figurine inside each egg. I found these micro resin spiders from Amazon for another project, but they fit perfectly for this idea. I went with a classic fillable wooden egg, even if that’s not actually accurate to a spider egg. Personally, it just seemed easiest. Especially since this idea was somewhat last minute.
Making a Lace Doily Spider Egg Sac
I’ve always felt that doilies look like spider webs. As such, my idea was to try and make them into a combination of sphere and ovid shapes to place the wooden eggs into. I have seen this done many times with things like cheesecloth turned into ghosts and a quick Pinterest search will yield all kinds of results. Although I have several of my grandmother’s doilies, I opted to pick a doily variety pack from Amazon instead since I did not know what the end result might be.
My approach was inflating balloons to prop in cups to drape the doilies over. With balloons blown into my desired shapes, I then dipped the doilies in a modge podge/water mixture. Next, they were left to dry for 24 hours. Once dry, the balloons were popped then removed. Sadly, I could not figure out how to make the doilies into the egg sack shapes I had envisioned. They just looked like cobweb domes.
I decided they’d have to do, then placed both them and the filled eggs throughout our backyard. Spiders have all kinds of egg sac shapes and textures, so we’ll just pretend that was the look I was aiming for.
Since the doily dome sacs were bright white, I thought Monster and Boo would spot them right away. However, it was not what they were expecting to search for. As such, they did have to change their mindset on what exactly they had to seek out. Once all the egg sacs were found, my littles ones even spent the next couple hours trying to hide the spider figures and eggs around the yard without the doilies.
Would You Participate in a Spider-Themed Hunt?
All in all, I think this idea came out well. Not a perfect execution, but cute enough that my children got into it far more than I expected. As such, I’d love to expand on what else to stuff into the eggs. Maybe random spider facts? Spider-shaped chocolates? Silly spider jokes? Who knows! However, I am curious to hear if you would participate in one of these sac hunts. Let me know down in the comments!
